Transforming waste plastic into designer furniture

Sungai Design, based in Bali, is redefining sustainable craftsmanship by creating all of its products from plastic waste collected from local rivers. Through its environmental initiative, Sungai Watch, the studio addresses Bali’s plastic pollution problem at its source.

Sungai Watch installs barriers in rivers to intercept plastic before it reaches the ocean. The collected waste is then sorted, cleaned, and transformed into high-quality design pieces. Every object produced by Sungai Design is made entirely from this reclaimed material, turning environmental damage into beautiful, functional forms.

The studio’s design ethos centers on circularity and responsibility. Instead of using virgin resources, they work exclusively with post-consumer plastic, reshaping it into furniture and objects that are clean, minimal, and rich in purpose. Each piece carries with it the story of its origin, reflecting a deep connection to place, people, and environment.

Sungai Design is not just about aesthetics. It represents a full-circle solution that brings together environmental restoration, local engagement, and thoughtful design. By pairing creativity with clean-up, Sungai proves that design can be both beautiful and impactful, and that waste can be reimagined into something lasting and meaningful.
